The Irrationality Complex
Laughing at funerals. What is that?!? What makes that entirely innapropriate little giggle burst forth and force its way into the world as a massive, improper guffaw?
Daily, I wish there was an ‘are you sure you want to proceed’ button before you act. Everything from laughter to snap comments to that moment when your voice comes out the wrong way, all those things just seem to pop out before you can stop them, an unwanted product of your pesky subconscious. Occasionally, it would be very handy to find the off switch.
I think the most frustrating bit is the irrationality of it all. How can a couple of chemicals in your brain make you act like an alien from outer space? Perhaps the more difficult thing is recognising that someone else has the same army of gremlins operating their faces/brains/vocal chords. It’s hard to forget a rash word/unfortunately timed laugh and not react with your own. The world would be a much better place if everyone came equipped with a ’not under rational control’ light. For now, I guess we just have to try not to kill each other…
