The Key To.

What is success? Technically, I guess, it’s being the best at something, but only one person can hold that elated position, so what about the rest of us? How do we quantify ourselves as a success on the family christmas card?

There are those folk, you probably know one or two of them, who are utterly driven to achieve something. They have a goal, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel, they’re going to get there and they will put both fingers up your nose if you try and stop them. That thing is their success, be it a career or a family, and it’s almost all they can think about. Others are making it up as they go along, seeing what works and what doesn’t, making smart decisions for the now. To them it’s all about the journey, and they’re happy to go the right way and see where they end up. Are either of these approaches better than the other? If you achieve your goal, burning yourself out to get there and then feeling a bit lost, are you successful? If you don’t really get anywhere definable or above expectation, but that’s ok with you, does that make you a failure?

I used to think success came from work, and then from love, and now I’m pretty sure it’s a little bit of both. Because if you’ve got a little bit of both, then you’re pretty likely to have a dollop of happiness, and I think that’s the sort of success that’s worth chasing.
